THE AUTHOR CONTENDS THAT THE CITY POLICE INSTITUTION DEVELOPED IN RESPONSE TO LABOR ORGANIZATION AND STRIKES AGAINST BUSINESSMEN WHO SERVED AS POLICE COMMISSIONER, MAYOR, AND POLICE SUPERINTENDENT DURING THIS PERIOD.
Abstract
HE ANALYZES HOW THE NEED FOR ADDITIONAL POLICE SERVICES GREW AS A RESULT OF THE CLASS INTERESTS OF POWERFUL MANUFACTURERS IN THIS INDUSTRIAL/COMMERCIAL CITY. ALSO SHOWN IS HOW THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE POLICE INSTITUTION WAS STRUCTURED ALONG CHANNELS EMPHASIZING THE CONTROL OF STRIKES AND WORKINGCLASS ORGANIZATIONS, THE CONTROL OF WORKING CLASS COMMUNITIES, AND THE CONTROL AND RE-SOCIALIZATION OF IMMIGRANTS IMPORTED TO SERVE THE DEMANDS OF INDUSTRY. A LIST OF REFERENCES IS INCLUDED.
