The activities of the Buffalo Police Department for the year 1978 are reported.
Abstract
The "Offenses Known to the Police" totaled 27,313 compared to 32,078 for the previous year, a reduction of 14 percent. This was the first time in recent years there had been such a drastic reduction in crime in Buffalo. The number of arrests was the highest in the month of October and the lowest in January. Most arrests were for driving under the influence, narcotic drug laws offenses, and assault. The value of property reported stolen was $17,548,518.00 and the amount recovered was $7,240,539.00. During the year, eight precinct sub-stations were placed in operation in various parts of the city and the Police/Community Services Unit was re-staffed in an effort to bring the police department closer to the community. Traffic law enforcement was stepped up and arrests increased considerably in the past year. The morale of the police officers was at an all-time high.
