In 1989, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Prince George Subdivision in British Columbia developed the "Building Better Communities" drug awareness program. The program aimed to encourage citizen involvement in the solution process to this problem, promote awareness through educational programs, act as a community resource, provide positive solutions, and create positive attitude changes within the community.
Abstract
The program focused on three strategic areas -- schools, the workplace, and the community -- where it would be most effective in reducing substance use and abuse. Teachers who implement the program must undergo a 3-day training session which provides them with strategies and teaching techniques. Police officers are used in these positive lifestyles programs to provide role models, support, and reinforcement for classroom teachers. Substance abuse problems in the workplace were addressed when key businesses, industrial and labor personnel, and police came together to discuss strategy and tactics to be used in substance abuse control. In the community, RCMP officers have been instrumental in developing community-based proactive prevention programs.
