This report presents major addresses, panel presentations, and workshop abstracts from the 1985 National Conference on Correctional Education, whose goal was to develop cooperation among correctional educators, Federal agencies, professional organizations, and the private sector in addressing juvenile and adult offender education needs.
Abstract
A major address describes the U.S. Department of Education's Correctional Education Program, which is designed to assist State and local jurisdictions to develop, expand, and improve their delivery systems for institutional correctional education programs. Another address identifies characteristics of effective correctional schools: school-based leadership, an instructional team, emphasis on inmates' acquisition of basic academic and vocational skills, testing and assessments, and a positive learning environment. Panel presentations inform conference participants about services, technical assistance, programs, and resources pertaining to correctional education available from various Federal agencies. The workshops provided participants with training on accessing existing resources, awareness of the educational needs of juvenile and adult offenders, and opportunities to develop action plans to meet offender educational needs. Appendixes list conference staff, presenters, and participants.
