Abstract
Following an overview of the demographics of Bulgaria, an overview of criminal legislation is provided. Topics discussed under criminal legislation are the development of criminal law and the law on criminal procedure, as well as the Execution of Punishments Act. The latter specifies the principles of organization and activities involved in the execution of punishments. Another section describes administrative infractions and administrative punishments. An "administrative infraction" is an act (action or omission) that violates the established order of state government, constitutes guilty conduct, and is defined as punishable with an administrative punishment imposed by administrative means. A section on the criminal justice system addresses the court, the prosecutor's office, investigative agencies, magistrates, and the Supreme Judicial Council. Other major sections of the booklet discuss the basic principles of criminal law, including special rules for juveniles; offenses under the Penal Code; criminal procedure; special proceedings; the execution of punishments; penitentiary establishments; crime victims; crime; punishments; and prospects for criminal law and criminal justice reforms. A 15-item bibliography and an appended list of statutory acts
