Abstract
One study views recidivism from an international perspective by examining recidivism data from West Germany, France, England, the United States, Sweden, Hong Kong, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, and Singapore, while another study focuses on Japan's ongoing research on recidivism through the use of the central computer system of criminal records. Criminal justice policy toward violent gangs in Japan is explored through the identification of social attitudes of an offender sample from this group; recommendations for treatment policy are provided. Next, parole decisionmaking is examined, with attention to any variability in decisionmaking factors related to the time an inmate has already served. Another study identifies the characteristics of the residents and the treatment programs in Japan's rehabilitation aid hostels -- private institutes which provide the ex-offender room and board while assisting his rehabilitation. In addition, a study of the differential treatment of juvenile delinquents clarifies the types of treatment given to a sample of juvenile delinquents in institutional and noninstitutional settings, using the perspective of the interpersonal-maturity-level theory. Other research analyzes any correlation between treatment effects and attitudes and norm consciousness of juvenile delinquents in juvenile training schools; studies the characteristics and treatment outcomes of juvenile delinquents admitted to juvenile classification homes, and probes the experience of female inmates after release using data on reconviction, frequency of arrest, interval of offense, and types of crime.
