This bulletin summarizes the 1989 research sponsored by the Japan Ministry of Justice's Research and Training Institute.
Abstract
One research study analyzes the influence of such economic changes as the rapid rise of commodity prices and workers' wages on the practice of fines, identifies problems in imposing fines, and proposes some countermeasures. Research on consumer fraud cases clarifies the circumstances of fraud cases conducted by companies, focusing on how the fraud cases originated and on offender characteristics. Other research examines crime trends in Japan and their characteristics after World War II, focusing on the relationship between social development and changing dimensions of crimes. Research that compares the characteristics of frequently imprisoned offenders with rehabilitated offenders is followed by a review of the characteristics of inmates in juvenile training schools according to the category of the treatment program. Other research pertains to the family relations of juvenile inmates, recidivism prediction, and the recidivism of adult probationers.
