Abstract
This guidebook, developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Department of Education, is intended for use by organizations, researchers, evaluators, community groups, educators, and public health officials working on bullying prevention efforts. The guidebook offers a uniform definition of bullying and a set of tools for use in gathering systematic data on bullying in order to better inform research and prevention efforts. The book is divided into five sections. The first section provides background information on the problem of bullying, describing what is presently known about the public health aspect of bullying and the need for having a uniform definition of the problem. The second section of the guidebook presents a uniform definition of bullying and description of key terms used in research and prevention efforts. The third section discusses factors and issues that need to be considered when gathering data on bullying using the uniform definition. The fourth section of the guidebook lists and describes a set of data elements that researchers would find useful to collect when monitoring bullying for prevention purposes. The final section of the guidebook includes a list of Federal Government resources for dealing with the problem bullying. References and appendix
