ARTICLE ON THE UNDERLYING THEORIES AND THE OPERATION OF A REHABILITATION AND TREATMENT PROGRAM FOR DRUG ADDICTS AND OTHER EX-OFFENDERS BASED ON THE THEORY OF SELF-HELP AND THE 'UP-BY-THE-BOOTSTRAPS AMERICAN DREAM.'
Abstract
THE SAN FRANCISCO (CA) COMMUNITY-BASED RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM IS BASED ON THE PROPOSITION THAT THE BEST PEOPLE TO REHABILITATE DRUG ADDICTS AND CRIMINALS ARE OTHER DRUG ADDICTS AND CRIMINALS. THE 'TREATMENT' OFFERED AT DELANCEY STREET IS HARD WORK IN THE FAMILY RESIDENCES AND BUSINESSES COMBINED WITH FREQUENT, BRUTAL 'ATTACK THERAPY' SESSIONS BORROWED FROM THE SYNANON PROGRAM, AFTER WHICH IT IS PARTIALLY MODELED. THIS ARTICLE DISCUSSES THE HISTORY OF DELANCEY STREET AND OF ITS FOUNDER EX-ADDICT JOHN MATTER, PROGRAM RULES, FINANCES, PROBLEMS, AND COMMUNITY ACCEPTANCE. THE INTERNAL ORGANIZATION AND THE TREATMENT PROGRAM ARE ALSO DESCRIBED IN DETAIL.
