This report describes the activities of the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) in fiscal year 1994, with emphasis on the crime prevention and crime control programs it funded during the year.
Abstract
In FY 1994, BJA administered more than $519 in newly appropriated funds from Congress and a total of $1.26 billion in support of 7,372 crime-fighting and crime prevention projects across the United States. The drug and crime control initiatives focused on 11 major areas. BJA also updated its computer technology for faster handling of an increased workload. It streamlined its grantmaking and administration procedures by reducing paperwork and clarifying application processes. In FY 1994, BJA received nearly 3,000 grant applications for new and continuing projects. In addition, the Police Hiring Supplement Program received more than 2,700 applications and was fully implemented in all 50 States, resulting in the hiring of more than 2,000 new community police officers. BJA actively supported and promoted partnerships between citizens and State and local criminal justice agencies and increased coordination and collaboration with other Department of Justice components and additional Federal agencies.
