The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) has undertaken a six-part drug treatment strategy that includes screening, education, residential treatment, nonresidential treatment, transitional treatment and evaluation.
Abstract
The evaluation phase assesses the effectiveness of the BOP's treatment programs in reducing recidivism and substance abuse relapse. It also attempts to identify inmates likely to require intensive treatment and those who may benefit from less intensive treatment. The original research design, in which residential treatment volunteers were assigned to one of three subgroups, was replaced by a quasi-experimental method that targets subjects coming from a modified set of comparison groups. A third revision to the study design occurred when it became evident that there were insufficient subjects immediately available for community follow-up. The pre-treatment data collection battery includes measures of motivation and cognitive characteristics, psychological impairment information, and sociodemographic data. Data are collected on the treatment program and implementation. After release, subjects may participate in further treatment in the community corrections environment.
