This article discusses the formation of the Bureau of Staff Enrichment at Ohio’s Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.
Abstract
Recognizing that an agency’s employees are its greatest resource, Ohio’s Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (DRC) developed the Bureau of Staff Enrichment (BSE) in July 1999 in order to recruit and retain employees. Unlike human resource offices that tend to focus on job “mechanics,” the BSE concentrates on developing an efficient, cooperative, effective work environment and promoting a balance between work and family life. Through teaching employees conflict management and mediation, through developing critical incident support teams, and by implementing a zero tolerance for workplace violence, the BSE has helped corrections employees better cope with work crises and feel more positive about their jobs. By helping workers balance their home and work lives and by helping employees to further their education and enhance their promotional opportunities, the bureau has made DRC employees its highest priority; and, as a result, DRC job satisfaction is on the rise.
