A BRIEF REPORT CNCENTRATING ON THE BEHAVIORAL ASPECTS OF BURGLARY AND ITS IMPACT ON BOTH VICTIMS AND THE PUBLIC IN GENERAL, WITH EMPHASIS ON THE ASPECTS OF THE VICTIM AND HIS PROPERTY WHICH MAKE HIM MOST BURGLARY PRONE.
Abstract
VICTIMIZATION SURVEYS REVEALED A POSITIVE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE PERCENTAGE OF SINGLE MALES OVER THE AGE OF FIFTEEN IN THE LOCAL POPULATION AND THE LIKELIHOOD OF BURGLARY IN THAT AREA. THESE SURVEYS, SUPPORTED BY INTERVIEWS WITH OFFENDERS, INDICATE THAT RANDOM OCCUPANCY PATTERNS, AND ACTIVITY DECREASE THE LIKELIHOOD THAT A DWELLING WILL BE BURGLARIZED. THE FINDINGS PRESENTED HERE ARE SAID TO BE TENTATIVE, AND A MORE DETAILED ANALYSIS OF OVER 1600 SURVEYS, DISTRIBUTED IN CANADA, IS UNDERWAY.
