Abstract
A summary information sheet briefly describes the data sources and presents facts on burglary in a question-and-answer format. Statistics on the incidence of burglary encompass the number that occurred in 1984; the increase in the number of burglaries over the past 10 years; the percent of burglaries that occurred in urban, suburban, and rural areas; and the percentage of burglaries that occurred in residential and nonresidential properties. Detailed statistics are given on the circumstances of 1984 burglaries, burglary victims, and persons arrested for burglary in 1984. Additional data cover the police response to 1984 burglaries, the dollar loss in 1984 burglaries, the percentage of stolen property recovered, the extent of violent crimes committed in a burglary, and the percentage of residential burglaries reported to police. Two issues of the Bureau of Justice Statistics Bulletin present 1984 Uniform Crime Reports data on all crime (with a breakdown for burglary) and victimization data from the National Crime Survey over the period 1973-82. Seven readings and four contact referrals are listed.
