NARRATIVE DISCUSSION OF THE 945 SUSPECTED, ATTEMPTED, AND ACTUAL BURGLARIES WHICH OCCURRED DURING ONE YEAR IN AN INCORPORATED SUBURB OF 100,000 INHABITANTS.
Abstract
ALL BURGLARY CASES OCCURRING BETWEEN JULY 1, 1968 AND JUNE 30, 1969 WERE EXAMINED AND CODED. FOR EVERY ONE COMMERCIAL BURGLARY, THREE RESIDENTIAL BURGLARIES WERE FOUND. BURGLARIES, ESPECIALLY COMMERCIAL ONES, ARE MORE LIKELY TO OCCUR AT NIGHT, AND RESIDENTIAL BURGLARIES WERE MORE OFTEN COMMITTED ON WEEKENDS. MOST BURGLARIES WERE REPORTED BY PRIVATE CITIZENS, AND THERE WAS OFTEN A SIGNIFICANT LAG FROM THE TIME A BURGLARY OCCURRED UNTIL THE POLICE LEARNED OF IT. POLICE RESPONSE WAS FOUND TO BE GREATER IN RESIDENTIAL BURGLARIES INVOLVING LARGE LOSSES.
