REPORT IS BASED ON FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS OF AD HOC COMMITTEE ESTABLISHED BY STATE OFFICIALS TO DEVISE METHODS TO STEM CRIME IN THE SCHOOLS.
Abstract
DURING 1973-74 IN LOS ANGELES CITY SCHOOLS, THERE WERE 210 ASSAULTS AGAINST SCHOOL PERSONNEL AND 745 ASSAULTS ON STUDENTS. THIS SORT OF STATISTICS PROMPTED THE 1974 FORMATION OF THE AD HOC COMMITTEE, COMPRISED OF PROMINENT SCHOOL OFFICIALS, EDUCATORS AND LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL FROM AROUND THE STATE. THE COMMITTEE HAD SUBCOMMITTEES ON JUVENILE JUSTICE, AGENCY COOPERATION, CRISIS RESPONSE, DATA COLLECTION, AND SCHOOL CLIMATE AND PRACTICES. COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS INCLUDE, AMONG OTHERS, SPONSORING LEGISLATION ON THE ENTIRE GAMUT OF JUVENILE JUSTICE REGARDING THE SCHOOLS, COMPOSING WRITTEN PLANS FOR THE HANDLING OF SCHOOL CRISES, AND ENCOURAGING THE INVOLVEMENT OF THE TOTAL COMMUNITY IN ESTABLISHING SCHOOL OBJECTIVES.
