STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF 186 CLINIC DIAGNOSES MADE BY THE CALIFORNIA YOUTH AUTHORITY AT THE REQUEST OF 39 COUNTIES HOLDING CONTRACTS.
Abstract
TABLE ONE GIVES THE BASIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CASES DIAGNOSED, BY CLINIC OF ADMISSION AND SEX OF SUBJECT. THE AGE RANGE WAS FROM 12 TO 19 YEARS OF AGE WITH THE MEDIAN AGE FOR MALES BEING 16.6 AND 15.7 FOR FEMALES. SIXTY PERCENT OF THE CASES WERE CAUCASIAN, AND 35 PERCENT OF THE CASES WERE FROM SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA COUNTIES (WITH LOS ANGELES REPRESENTING THE COUNTY WITH THE LARGEST NUMBER OF CASES). BURGLARY WAS THE LARGEST OFFENSE CATEGORY FOR MALES. THE MEAN LENGTH OF STAY WAS 6.0 WEEKS FOR MALES AND 6.7 WEEKS FOR FEMALES. TABLE TWO SHOWS THE CLINIC RECOMMENDATION BY SEX AND CLINIC. THE LARGEST PERCENTAGE WERE RECOMMENDED FOR PROBATION IN THEIR OWN HOMES (45 PERCENT). TABLES THREE AND FOUR SHOW THE CLINIC RECOMMENDATION BY THE YOUTH AUTHORITY STATUS FOR MALES AND FEMALES, RESPECTIVELY. NINE PERCENT OF THE MALES AND 35 PERCENT OF THE FEMALES WERE COMMITTED TO THE YOUTH AUTHORITY AFTER A RECOMMENDATION FOR PROBATION. TABLES FIVE AND SIX SHOW THE CLINIC RECOMMENDATION AND THE BASIC CHARACTERISTICS FOR THE MALES AND THE FEMALES, RESPECTIVELY. RECOMMENDATIONS TO YOUTH AUTHORITY WERE USED MOST OFTEN FOR MALES FROM THE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY AREA AND FOR CAUCASIANS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
