STATISTICS ARE PRESENTED ON THE NUMBER OF JUVENILES DETAINED IN CALIFORNIA LOCAL JAILS OR LOCKUPS DURING 1976 AND 1977, AND ON THE NUMBER OF MINORS DETAINED FOR 24 HOURS OR MORE.
Abstract
DATA ARE PRESENTED BY COUNTY ON THE SIZE OF THE JUVENILE POPULATION AGED 10 TO 17, THE NUMBER OF JUVENILES ARRESTED, THE ARREST RATE PER 1,000 POPULATION, TOTAL JUVENILE DETENIONS, AND DETENTIONS FOR 24 HOURS OR MORE. FROM 1976 TO 1977, THE NUMBER OF JUVENILE ARREST DECREASES 11.2 PERCENT, THE ARREST RATE DECREASED 9.3 PERCENT, AND THE NUMBER OF MINORS DETAINED IN JAIL DECREASED 13.2 PERCENT. THE PERCENTAGE CHANGE IN NUMBER OF MINORS DETAINED VARIED WIDELY AMONG COUNTRIES, WITH 41 COUNTRIES SHOWING A DECREASE AND 17 SHOWING AN INCREASE. THE NUMBER OF 24-HOUR-PLUS DETENTIONS DURING JULY-DECEMBER 1977 WAS 39.6 PERCENT LESS THAN THE NUMBER DURING JULY-DECEMBER 1976. IN 1977, THE NUMBER OF MINORS DETAINED OVER 24 HOURS WAS HIGHER IN COUNTIES WITH JUVENILE PROBATION DETENTION FACILITIES JUVENILE HALLS, BUT THE RATE OF SUCH DETENTIONS (PER 1,000 JUVENILE POPULATION) WAS HIGHER IN COUNTIES WITHOUT JUVENILE HALLS. AN APPENDED TABLE BREAKS DOWN STATISTICS ON TOTAL DETENTIONS BY SEX OF DETAINEE AND BY REPORTING JURISDICTION WITHIN EACH COUNTY. A SECOND APPENDED TABLE BREAKS DOWN 24-HOUR-PLUS DETENTION DATA BY REPORTING FACILITY AND BY DETAINEE SEX, CHARGE, LENGTH OF STAY IN JAIL, AND DISPOSITION. THE NUMBER OF FEMALES DETAINED OVER 24 HOURS WAS RELATIVELY SMALL. IN EARLY 1977, THE AVERAGE LENGTH FOR JUVENILES DETAINED OVER 24 HOURS WAS 9.9 DAYS; IN LATE 1977, IT WAS 9.2 DAYS. (LKM)
