Abstract
THE PLAN BY THE DEPARTMENT OF THE YOUTH AUTHORITY OF CALIFORNIA ENVISIONS GREATER COORDINATION OF LOCAL AND STATE YOUTH CORRECTIONS FACILITIES, A GREATER NUMBER OF ALTERNATIVES TO TRADITIONAL CORRECTIONS PROGRAMS, BETTER EVALUATION OF EXISTING ALTERNATIVES TO INSTITUTIONALIZATION, AND STRONGER COMMUNITY SUPPORT SYSTEMS. SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS ARE ALSO MADE FOR EXISTING JUVENILE CORRECTIONS INSTITUTIONS. OBJECTIVES ARE LISTED UNDER THE FOLLOWING TOPICS: 'CRIME AND DELINQUENCY PREVENTION,' 'DIVERSION, 'LOCAL YOUTH CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMS,' 'STATE YOUTH CORRECTIONS INSTITUTIONS PROGRAMS,' 'STATE YOUTH CORRECTIONS REENTRY PROGRAMS,' 'STATE YOUTH CORRECTIONS PAROLE,' AND 'SUPPORT SERVICES' (I.E., LEGAL AID FOR JUVENILES, DEMONSTRATION PROGRAMS, FINDING NEW FUNDING SOURCES). EACH TOPIC INCLUDES CONSIDERATION OF THE PRESENT SYSTEM, PROBLEMS, AND GOALS, OBJECTIVES AND IMPLEMENTATION. DOCUMENTATION FOR EACH OF THE STRATEGIES IS INCLUDED IN THE TEXT. (GLR)
