This report is presented to the Bell Gardens Police Department (California) in order to guide it in making major decisions about the content of entry-level patrol officer selection standards, performance appraisal procedures, and training programs.
Abstract
The report contains computer printouts that describe the content of the patrol officer's job in the Bell Gardens Police Department (BGPD). Recommendations are offered for the use of the BGPD's data in the evaluation of the job relatedness of personnel practices. The report contains the results of the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training's (POST's) efforts over the past 2 years in identifying the tasks/duties and behaviors/activities that are performed by and characteristics required of California local government, entry-level peace officers who are assigned to radio-car patrol. The measurement of behaviors, skills, knowledge, abilities, and other characteristics that are prerequisites for successful performance is the goal of current and future projects conducted by POST. Sections of the report are divided into background and organizational information, task information, behavioral information, incident information, and vehicle and equipment use. 10 tables, references, and appended supplementary material
