STATISTICS FOR 10-YEAR SUMMARIES, LOCATION, TIME, DRIVERS AND VEHICLES, BICYLE ACCIDENTS, AND MISCELLANEOUS SUBJECTS ARE PROVIDED FOR FATAL AND INJURY ACCIDENTS IN CALIFORNIA IN 1977.
Abstract
DATA PROVIDED ARE COMPILED FROM MOTOR VEHICLE TRAFFIC ACCIDENT REPORTS RECEIVED FROM LOCAL POLICE JURISDICTIONS AND CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL FIELD OFFICES. WHILE 'PROPERTY DAMAGE ONLY' ACCIDENT FIGURES ARE REPORTED IN ONE SECTION, THE DEGREE OF COMPLETENESS OF THESE DATA IS QUESTIONABLE. MONTHLY STATISTICS ARE PROVIDED IN 10-YEAR SUMMARIES FROM 1968 THROUGH 1977. RESULTS SHOW THAT DURING 1977, CALIFORNIA'S FATAL ACCIDENTS INCREASED 11.6 PERCENT, WHILE INJURY ACCIDENTS INCREASED 9.5 PERCENT. VEHICLE MILES OF TRAVEL WERE THE HIGHEST EVER RECORDED FOR THE STATE, (153.6 BILLION) INVOLVING AN INCREASE OF 8.O PERCENT OVER 1976. THE STATE'S MILEAGE DEATH RATE REMAINED AT 3.2 FOR THE FOURTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR, THE LOWEST RECORDED IN THE STATE'S TRAFFIC ACCIDENT HISTORY AND BELOW THE 3.3 NATIONAL DEATH RATE LEVEL. ONE OF TWO ADDITIONAL SECTIONS IN THE ANNUAL REPORT PRESENTS STATISTICS ON FATAL AND INJURY BICYCLE-INVOLVED MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS FOR THE LAST 5 YEARS. THE INFORMATION PROVIDED INDICATES THAT BICYCLE ACCIDENTS HAVE DECREASED WHILE OTHER FATAL AND INJURY MOTOR VEHICLE TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS HAVE INCREASED. THE SECOND ADDED SECTION PRESENTS STATISTICS ON ACCIDENTS INVOLVING MOPEDS, ACCIDENTS BY PRIMARY COLLISION FACTORS, ALCOHOL INVOLVEMENT IN ACCIDENTS, ACCIDENTS INVOLVING SELECTED AGE GROUPS (THOSE AGED 65 AND OVER AND THOSE AGED 13-19), AND TRUCK ACCIDENTS ON UNINCORPORATED ROADWAYS.
