This is the 2004-2005 Annual Report of the California Institute on Human Services (CIHS), which works in concert with the faculty, staff, and students of Sonoma State University to deliver a wide range of services designed to improve educational, social, and health-related programs throughout the State and country.
Abstract
The CIHS's current areas of focus include family violence prevention, early childhood education, language development, literacy, improvement in low performing schools, service learning, special education, and career vocational education. This report describes the features of projects currently being conducted by the CIHS. Three projects are designed to improve the involvement and functioning of disabled persons in the work force. Ten projects address early-childhood special needs. These projects include a curriculum for prekindergarten learning and development, a preschool instructional network, technical assistance for training programs designed to improve child and family development, and improved access to developmental and health resources for children with disabilities. Ten projects pertain to family violence prevention. They include training for adoption, capacity-building for tribal constituents, training for mandated child abuse reporters, assistance for faith leaders in addressing domestic violence, and the development of cultural competency for the State's child/family professionals. One project targets school reform, and five projects pertain to service and community-based learning. A project entitled California Services for Technical Assistance and Training provide training for special educators, i.e., educators who work with disabled children and others with special educational needs. A section on CIHS internal development and support describes distance learning and technology used by CIHS, evaluation and research, grant writing, publications, and business services.
