These guidelines present step-by-step methods for meeting the minimum standards established in California's criminal code for evidential examines of adult and child female and male sexual assault victims.
Abstract
Individual sections cover reporting requirements for suspected sexual assault and child abuse; requirements for consent for examination, treatment, and evidence collection; and the financial responsibility for examination, treatment, and testing. Other sections explain crime victim compensation and victim assistance programs, the medical examination of the individual; the labeling and preservation of evidence; the chain of custody of evidence; the treatment of sexually transmitted diseases; and followup care. Further sections discuss the handling of specific types of evidence, including clothing, fingernail scrapings, body fluids, bite marks and bruises, hair, and other materials. Both physical and psychological indicators of assault are included, and guidelines are given for a supportive approach to victims. Flow charts, illustrations, and appended forms, diagrams, additional directions, and text of California law
