The California Prison Industry Authority (PIA) aims to employ State prison inmates in a private-industry-like environment by producing and selling quality goods and services at competitive prices, maintaining a safe and efficient environment that promotes work ethic, and expanding markets and developing new products.
Abstract
As a result of its revised mission statement and more businesslike operations, in fiscal 1989-1990 PIA realized a profit of $3.4 million on record sales of $115 million. Inmate employment increased by nearly 9 percent by the end of the fiscal year. Seven new enterprises were activated during the year, while marginal enterprises were reviewed to determine their potential for profitability. PIA implemented a Manufacturing/Accounting Planning System (MAPS), which links institutional factories to a master computer in its central office. During this year, PIA contracted with a private firm to represent its products in selected markets as a means to increase penetration into local agency markets. This annual report consists of the auditors' report; balance sheets; and statements of operations, equity and bond fund advances, and cash flows.
