This report presents 1987 statistics on felons and nonfelons in the 16 institutions and 4 parole regions administered by California Department of Corrections (DOC), focusing on characteristics and behavior of the institutional population and parolees.
Abstract
Following a summary of the total DOC population and movements in and out of institutions, the report examines felons newly received from court. These statistics are broken down by offense, race, age, area of admission, marital status, substance abuse history, intelligence, and education. The same categories describe the institutional population, with the addition of prior commitment, military record, employment history, and escape history. Statistics on inmate behavior address escapes, assaults, and time credits. The report also summarizes demographic and offense characteristics of parolees and offenders' movements into and release from parole. The last chapter examines other populations under the DOC: the Civil Narcotic Addict Program, County Diagnostic Cases, Community-Based Programs, inmates on death row, and Parolees at Large. Graphs, tables, and a glossary.
