TESTS COMPARING ENTRANCE ABILITY OF BURGLARS TO THE PROTECTIVE ABILITY OF SECURITY SYSTEMS ARE DESCRIBED, AND AN ANALYSIS OF WAYS TO IMPLEMENT BUILDING SECURITY STANDARDS IS PRESENTED.
Abstract
THE CALIFORNIA BUILDING SECURITY LAW OF 1971 REQUIRED DEVELOPMENT OF BUILDING SECURITY STANDARDS TO REDUCE THE LEVELS OF BURGLARY IN CALIFORNIA. AN ANALYSIS OF BURGLARY THREATS AND SECURITY SYSTEMS WAS CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE APPROPRIATE SECURITY STANDARDS, ESPECIALLY IN THE AREAS OF DOOR SYSTEMS, SLIDING DOORS AND WINDOWS, WINDOW SYSTEMS, HARDWARE, AND BUILDING MATERIALS. METHODS TO ENABLE NEW STANDARDS TO BECOME A PART OF CALIFORNIA LAW ARE DISCUSSED. INCORPORATION OF THESE STANDARDS INTO THE STATE BUILDING CODE AND AMENDMENT OF THE STATE HEALTH AND SAFETY CODE TO INCLUDE THESE STANDARDS ARE TWO SUCH METHODS.
