This volume presents a transcript of a hearing held by a California legislative subcommittee in November 1983 to examine overcrowding, the potential for violence, and the declining morale among correctional officers at the California Institution for Men at Chino, Calif.
Abstract
Speakers included local citizens, law enforcement agents, and prison officials. They discussed potential internal improvements to prevent escapes similar to ones that had recently occurred, the tension level and violence, overcrowding, prison programs, and staff turnover. Progress on a citizen notification system in the event of another escape and the level of ongoing coordination in security and other areas were also addressed. Newspaper accounts of the hearing, a report on increased security measures, and letters from correctional officials and a State senator are also included.
