Abstract
THE EMERGENCE OF CAMPUS LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES, FROM THEIR BEGINNINGS AS CAMPUS SECURITY AGENCIES, IS TRACED. MANY CAMPUS OFFICERS NOW HAVE THE SAME TRAINING, DUTIES, AND AUTHORITY AS LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THE CONCEPT OF SECONDARY SCHOOL SECURITY OFFICERS IS TOO NEW FOR THEM TO BE ACCEPTED AS LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICES, BUT THAT THEIR ROLE MAY EVOLVE IN MUCH THE SAME WAY AS THAT OF THEIR CAMPUS COUNTERPARTS.
