REVIEW OF THE OBJECTIVES OF PSYCHIATRIC SERVICES IN ANY CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM, GIVING THE HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF PSYCHIATRIC SERVICES IN THE CANADIAN PENITENTIARY SYSTEM.
Abstract
THE REPORT FORMULATES THE REQUIREMENTS FOR PROVIDING ADEQUATE PSYCHIATRIC SERVICES IN THE SPECIFICALLY CANADIAN SETTING-WHEREIN VARIOUS ALTERNATIVES ARE CONSIDERED AND NUMEROUS RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE AS TO HOW SUCH SERVICES MIGHT BE EFFECTED. INCLUDED IS A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF PRACTICES IN ENGLAND, THE UNITED STATES AND EUROPE. FINALLY, THE REPORT DEALS WITH THE PROBLEM OF EVALUATING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PSYCHIATRIC SERVICES IN TERMS OF COST BENEFITS. THIS MATTER WILL ALSO BE THE SUBJECT OF A COMPLEMENTARY REPORT RENDERED BY CONSULTING ECONOMISTS APPOINTED BY THE SOLICITOR GENERAL TO COLLABORATE WITH THE ADVISORY BOARD OF PSYCHIATRIC CONSULTANTS. --IN ENGLISH AND FRENCH (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
