THE GOALS OF THIS 1976 SURVEY WERE TO ASCERTAIN THE DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS OF JUVENILES DEALT WITH BY POLICE, PROVIDE INFORMATION ON JUVENILE CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR AND IDENTIFY HOW JUVENILES WERE DEALT WITH BY POLICE.
Abstract
DATA WAS BASED ON A FINAL SAMPLE OF 8,903 JUVENILES WHO CAME IN CONTACT WITH POLICE. THE SURVEY SHOWED THAT MOST JUVENILE OFFENSES ARE PROPERTY CRIMES, THAT 15 YEAR-OLDS ARE THE LARGEST GROUP OF JUVENILE OFFENDERS (25%), THAT HALF OF THE JUVENILES HAD NO PRIOR RECORD, THAT THERE IS NOT A GREAT DIFFERENCE IN THE TYPE OF OFFENSES COMMITTED IN METROPOLITAN COMPARED TO RURAL AREAS, AND THAT THE ACTION TAKEN BY POLICE IN DEALING WITH JUVENILES VARIED SUBSTANTIALLY AMONG PROVINCES AND METROPOLITAN AREAS.
