THE 1976-1977 ACTIVITIES OF THE AGENCY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE IN THE PROVINCE OF ONTARIO ARE REPORTED.
Abstract
THE REPORT ENCOMPASSES THE FOLLOWING SUBDIVISIONS OF THE MINISTRY OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL: OFFICE OF THE LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL; POLICY DEVELOPMENT DIVISION; COURTS ADMINISTRATION AND INSPECTOR OF LEGAL OFFICES; CROWN LAW OFFICE; CROWN ATTORNEYS SYSTEM; CIVIL LITIGATION AND LEGAL ADVISORY SERVICES; COMMON LEGAL SERVICES; AND PROGRAMS AND ADMINISTRATION DIVISION. ALSO REPORTED ARE THE ACTIVITIES OF THE ONTARIO LAW REFORM COURT, CRIMINAL INJURIES COMPENSATION BOARD, LAND COMPANSATION BOARD, AND BOARD OF NEGOTIATION. SPECIAL ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE MINISTRY'S EXPANSION OF THE TRAFFIC TRIBUNAL CONCEPT INTO THREE BOROUGHS OF TORONTO. THE CONCEPT, WHICH WAS PILOT TESTED IN NORTH YORK, REMOVES ALL PROVINCIAL TRAFFIC OFFENSES FROM THE CRIMINAL COURTS, HANDLING SUCH CASES LESS FORMALLY IN A SEPARATE TRAFFIC TRIBUNAL. OTHER COMPONENTS OF THE TRIBUNAL PROGRAM ARE A DRIVER IMPROVEMENT COURSE AND THE OPPORTUNITY FOR TICKETED DRIVERS TO PLEAD GUILTY WITH AN EXPLANATION. THE REPORT ALSO CALLS ATTENTION TO THE MINISTRY'S COMMUNITY SERVICE ORDER PROGRAM, WHICH PROVIDES A CONCUSTODIAL SENTENCING ALTERNATIVE FOR LOW-RISK OFFENDERS, AND TO THE ONTARIO LAW REFORM COMMISSION'S STUDY OF OCCUPIERS' LIABILITY.
