ACTIVITIES AND OPERATIONS OF THE ONTARIO MINISTRY OF THE SOLICITOR GENERAL FOR CALENDAR YEAR 1977 ARE PRESENTED IN THIS ANNUAL REPORT.
Abstract
DURING 1977, THE MINISTRY WAS INVOLVED IN A WIDE VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES CONCERNED WITH THE RELATED AREAS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AND PUBLIC PROTECTION. ECONOMIES HAVE ENABLED THE MINISTRY TO MAINTAIN EFFECTIVE LEVELS OF POLICING AND SERVICES DESPITE FISCAL RESTRAINTS. OVERALL MANAGEMENT OF MINISTRY AGENCIES AND ACTIVITIES IS THROUGH THE MINISTRY OFFICE. DUTIES OF THE MINISTRY OFFICE DIVISIONS AND ADVISORS IN THE AREAS OF MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS, POLICE LIAISON, COMMUNICATIONS, LEGAL SERVICES, AUDITING, AND ADMINISTRATION ARE REVIEWED. THE MINISTRY INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING AGENCIES: THE ONTARIO POLICE COMMISSION AND ITS POLICE SERVICE ADVISOR, INTELLIGENCE, PLANNING AND RESEARCH, AND POLICE COLLEGE SECTIONS; THE ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE WHICH INCUDES ADMINISTRATION, STAFF SERVICES, SPECIAL SERVICES, AND FIELD OPERATIONS/TRAFFIC OPERATIONS; THE PUBLIC SAFETY DIVISION INCLUDING THE CHIEF CORONER'S OFFICE, THE CENTRE OF FORENSIC SCIENCES, AND THE FIRE MARSHALL; AND THE ADMINISTRATION DIVISION WHICH HAS RESPONSIBILITY FOR FINANCIAL AND PERSONNEL SERVICES, PLANNING AND EVALUATION, AND OTHER ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES. OPERATIONS AND ACTIVITIES IN EACH OF THESE AGENCIES ARE DELINEATED, AND EXTENSIVE STATISTICAL TABULAR DATA ARE PROVIDED. MAJOR PROGRAMS DURING THE YEAR HAVE INVOLVED IMPROVED MANPOWER TRAINING, CRIME PREVENTION AND PUBLIC EDUCATION, INDIAN RESERVE POLICING, IMPROVING COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS, AND INCREASING PARTICIPATION IN THE ORGAN DONATION PROGRAM.
