ANALYSIS OF INCONSISTENCIES IN CORRECTIONS DATA FROM THE SIX INPUT SOURCES ARE DESCRIBED.
Abstract
THE SOURCES OF PENITENTIARY POPULATION DATA ARE IDENTIFIED AS COURT STATISTICS, CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION STATISTICS, THE WEEKLY INMATE POPULATION RETURN, THE INMATE RECORDS SYSTEM, PAROLE DECISION AND MANDATORY SUPERVISION RELEASE, AND THE NATIONAL PAROLE BOARD STATISTICS. THE FOUR PRIMARY REASONS FOR DATA IMCOMPATIBILITIES ARE DIFFERENT REPORTING METHODS, CONFUSION OVER DEFINITIONS AND TERMINOLOGY, REPORTING TIME SEQUENCES OR 'TIME LAG', AND PAROLE AND MANDATORY SUPERVISION VIOLATIONS. AFTER COMPARING THE ADVANTAGES OF USING THE DIFFERENT INPUTS, IT WAS DECIDED TO USE THE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION STATISTICS.
