Abstract
THE ESSAY WAS WRITTEN FOR THE CANADIAN COUNCIL OF CHURCHES' AD HOC COMMITTEE ON CAPITAL PUNISHMENT, BECAUSE EFFORTS ARE CURRENTLY UNDERWAY TO RESTORE THE DEATH PENALTY, WHICH CANADA ABOLISHED IN 1976. FOR EACH PUBLISHED WORK CITED, THE AUTHOR NOTES THE POSITION ON CAPITAL PUNISHMENT (ABOLITIONIST, RETENTIONIST, OR RESEARCH). POSITIONS TAKEN BY WRITERS AS EARLY AS 428 B.C. AND BY CANADIAN RELIGIOUS BODIES ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. IN ADDITION, THERE ARE TWO ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHIES. THE FIRST LISTS SOURCE BOOKS AND REPORTS CONSIDERED TO BE OF CONTINUING IMPORTANCE.
