Amsterdam's Jellinek Center is an umbrella organization within which a number of approaches and disciplines work together to provide a wide range of educational and treatment options for both problematic drug and alcohol users.
Abstract
Before reaching the Jellinek Center, problem drug users have a number of options designed to reduce the harm of drug abuse. Methadone buses supply oral methadone to registered clients, exchange old syringes and needles for new ones, and supply condoms. Family doctors supply oral methadone to registered clients, give physical checkups, and refer clients to cure programs. Neighborhood centers supply oral methadone, urinalysis, syringe exchange, condoms, physical checkups, psycho-social treatment, AIDS prevention, and referrals to cure programs. A client seeking further treatment would usually be referred to the Consultancy Bureau of Alcohol and Drugs (CAD), which is part of the Jellinek Center. Here the client's problem is assessed and a treatment program devised. This could involve the client being treated at the CAD or referred to either an inpatient or outpatient clinic. 2 references.
