DISCUSSION AND INTERPRETATION OF THE SPECTRUM OF CAREER CRIME, TRACING THE HISTORICAL AND SOCIOLOGICAL EVOLUTION OF VARIOUS TYPES, INCLUDING PROFESSIONAL CRIME, PROFESSIONAL 'HEAVY' CRIME, AND ORGANIZED CRIME.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR RELATES THE VARIOUS TYPES OF CRIME TO ONE ANOTHER HISTORICALLY AND STRUCTURALLY, PLACES EACH TYPE IN ITS CONTEMPORARY CONTEXT, AND EXPLORES FUTURE PROSPECTS FOR CAREERS IN CRIME. HE PRESENTS A BASIS FOR UNDERSTANDING CRIME DEVELOPMENT BY EXPLAINING ITS ORIGINS IN THE DISINTEGRATION OF THE EUROPEAN FEUDAL ORDER; THE CAPITALISTIC ECONOMIC ORDER WHICH EMERGED FROM THAT PERIOD CREATED A NEW CLASS OF ECONOMICALLY AND OCCUPATIONALLY DISPLACED PERSONS WHO DEVELOPED CRIME CAREERS AS ALTERNATIVE FORMS OF ECONOMIC SUBSISTENCE. AN ANALYSIS OF FUTURE PROSPECTS FOR CRIME TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE KIND OF POLITICAL ECONOMY IN WHICH IT WILL HAVE TO SURVIVE AND COMPETE. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED) (SNI ABSTRACT)
