This is a guide to help individuals improve their oral interviewing skills when applying for a law enforcement position or when being interviewed for promotion.
Abstract
The guide provides suggestions, tips, examples and strategies that would be useful in preparing for entry-level interviews as well as interviews for promotion. It is divided into the following chapters: (1) The Oral Board; (2) The Situational Question; (3) The First Impression; (4) Entry and Lateral Levels; (5) Promotional; (6) Suggestions and Strategies; (7) Entry and Lateral Questions; (8) Sergeant’s Questions; and (9) A Career in Law Enforcement. In a promotional interview, it is important that the candidate be knowledgeable about department policies and procedures as well as some case law. The guide can be used by applicants for civilian jobs in law enforcement as well as applicants for sworn officer positions. Many of the suggestions, such as how to dress and how to prepare, are applicable to any job or promotion interview and are not unique to the law enforcement field.
