Abstract
Administrators, teachers, parents, students, policymakers, and community leaders all want to keep schools safe and secure. A comprehensive school safety plan combines immediate solutions, long-term prevention planning, and prevention programs with a focus on the school facility, incorporating security technology and staff training. However, in order for a community to pay attention to the safety and security of children, it will take the involvement of parents and caregivers. Parents and caregivers can provide children with a voice by speaking out for their needs. Successful, safe, and effective schools have high levels of parent and caregiver involvement. To improve school safety, parents and/or primary caregivers need to listen to the children, educate themselves, involve themselves, and advocate for and effect change. The National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) in partnership with other organizations is developing a replicable safety and security model to be used in schools. This guidebook is the first piece in this model development and is intended to help parents and/or caregivers work towards making children’s schools safer and more secure.
