This report presents statistics on carjacking offenses in New Jersey during 2000.
Abstract
The data covered carjackings reported by State, county, and municipal law enforcement agencies to the New Jersey State police, Uniform Crime Reporting Unit. The report outlined the extent, type, and geographic location of carjacking activity. The data revealed that 7 of the 427 carjacking offenses reported to the police were unfounded, leaving a total of 420 carjackings involving 473 victims, including passengers. The total was 11 percent higher than in 1999. Twenty-four of New Jersey’s 566 municipalities reported carjackings. Fifty-one percent of the carjackings involved firearms; 4 percent involved shootings. Vehicles registered in New Jersey represented 89 percent of all carjackings. Sixty-one percent of all carjacked vehicles were recovered. Carjackings occurred in a residential area 43 percent of the time and between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. a total of 74 percent of the time. Arrests cleared 13 percent of the carjackings. Tables and figures
