Abstract
THE CITATIONS WERE COMPILED BY STUDENTS INVOLVED IN ANALYZING THE LITERATURE ON POLITICAL BOSSES AND MACHINES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN'S DEPARTMENT OF URBAN AFFAIRS. REFERENCES WERE SELECTED INITIALLY FROM THE CUMULATIVE BOOK INDEX UNDER POLITICS, CORRUPTION, AND GOVERNMENT HEADINGS AND THEN SCREENED TO IDENTIFY BOOKS WHICH WERE RELEVANT TO THE STUDY. ADDITIONAL MATERIALS WERE LOCATED BY REVIEWING HISTORY BOOKS OF INDIVIDUAL CITIES FOR NAMES OF POLITICAL BOSSES AND MACHINES. THE BIBLIOGRAPHY LISTS BOOKS ON SINGLE BOSSES OR MACHINES AND INCLUDES STUDIES ON AL SMITH, TAMMANY HALL, FRANK HAGUE, THE PENDERGAST MACHINE, MAYOR RIZZO, RICHARD DALEY, AND ABE RUEF. BOOKS THAT DID NOT FOCUS ON ONE PARTICULAR BOSS OR MACHINE ARE CATEGORIZED SEPARATELY. ALMOST TWO-THIRDS OF THE CASE STUDIES CONCERN POLITICS IN NEW YORK OR CHICAGO. THE FINAL SECTION REORGANIZES THE TITLES UNDER THE FOLLOWING TOPICS: BOOKS NOT DEALING WITH NEW YORK OR CHICAGO, CASE STUDIES PRIMARILY CONCERNED WITH MACHINES, AND CASE STUDIES OF POLITICAL BOSSES.
