Abstract
The authors studied the efforts of the Abington, Pennsylvania school district to develop a comprehensive safe schools program. The approach selected by the district, the Communities That Care (CTC) approach, required the formation of community-school partnerships. The demographic characteristics and performance challenges faced by the Abington schools are discussed including detailed information on community population and income. The importance of collaboration among various school and community interests is discussed. Community resources used by the Abington schools are described. In general, the goals of the program were distilled into one main goal of creating a positive school climate. In this context, a positive school climate is marked by safety, academic achievement, reduced bullying and reduced substance abuse problems. Contact information for several of those community agencies are provided as an appendix to the study. Chart, appendix, 8 references
