This casebook provides seven case examples and commentaries of clinical presentations of children abused through pediatric condition falsification (PCF), cases that met the criteria for factitious disorder by proxy (FDP), and presentations with the possibility of being mistaken for PCF and/or FDP.
Abstract
Providing a companion to the definitional issues of Munchausen by Proxy (MBP), this casebook provides examples of what is and isn’t MBP and its components. They are offered as beginning illustrations of some of the many presentations of pediatric condition falsification (PCF), MBP, and other presentations that may be confused with MBP. The case examples were divided into four sections. The cases in section one on MBP included multiple system disorders as an example of PCF and FDP, apnea and apparent life-threatening events as examples of PCF and FDP, and psychiatric illness as an example of PCF and FDP. Cases presented in section two on PCF that were not FDP included psychotic disorder in the mother resulting in PCF but not FDP and the “help seeker” as an example of PCF that was not FDP. The case in section three on false suspicions of PCF and FDP included cyclic vomiting in a case of false suspicions of PCF and FDP. In the final section on primary fictitious disorder in children and adolescents, the case example presented was on diabetes mellitus as an example of primary factitious disorder. References
