Recommendations are outlined by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on responses to influenza for institutions of higher education during the current 2009-2010 academic year and future recommendations.
Abstract
Recommendations are divided into two groups; 1) recommendations to use now, during this academic year (2009-2010), and 2) recommendations to consider adding if the flu begins to cause more severe disease. Recommendations under current flu conditions (similar severity as in spring/summer 2009) include: 1) facilitate self-isolation of residential students with flu-like illness; 2) promote self-isolation at home by non-resident students, faculty, and staff; 3) high-risk students and staff that become ill with flu-like symptoms should consult their healthcare provider for early treatment and get vaccinated against the flu; 4) discourage campus visits by ill persons; 5) encourage hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette; 6) routine cleaning; and 7) consideration for specific student populations should include a review of policies for study abroad programs and communication of plans, policies, and strategies with partner K-12 schools. Recommendations under conditions with increased severity compared to spring/summer 2009 include: 1) permit high-risk students, faculty, and staff to stay home when the flu is spreading in the community; 2) increase social distances; 3) extend the self-isolation period; and 4) consider suspending classes. This report provides guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to help decrease the spread of flu among students, faculty, and staff of institutions of higher education (IHE) and postsecondary educational institutions during the 2009-2010 academic year.
