Abstract

The data are for jails in Alabama, Arkansas, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. The data tables are presented by State, county, and facility. One table shows inmate population, jail capacity, and jails under court order on June 30, 1983. Other inmate data show detention status on June 3, 1983; average daily population; those held for Federal, State, and other local authorities; sex of adult/juvenile inmates; number of confinement units, beds, and inmates by confinement unit use; and confinement space. Financial information addresses planned changes in jails and cost between June 30, 1983, and June 30, 1986, and expenditures for fiscal year July 1, 1982, and June 30, 1983. Other data cover number and type of payroll and nonpayroll employees, work release and weekend sentence programs, exercise activities, medical screening and assessments, medical physical exams, and medical facilities and personnel.
