This report presents statistics on the New Zealand inmate population during 1993 and compares them to those contained in previous censuses.
Abstract
The numbers of inmates housed in New Zealand prison are presented in terms of total populations, payment defaulters, sentenced inmates, and remand prisoners. The section on sentenced inmates presents an inmate profile and statistics on sentence length, previous time in custody, current offense, classification status, gang membership, psychological and psychiatric supervision, medication, work parole, home leave, participation in employment and other programs, and young offenders. This most recent of four biennial censuses reports a drop in the number of sentence inmates. This decrease results from changes in legislation which has encouraged alternative sanctions for property offenders whenever possible, and modified release provisions for inmates. Since these censuses began, there has been a decline in the number of inmates affiliated with gangs. 45 tables
