PUBLISHED AS PART OF THE NATIONAL PRISONER STATISTICS PROGRAM, THIS REPORT PRESENTS DATA, ON A STATE-BY-STATE BASIS, DERIVED FROM THE 1973 CENSUS OF PRISONERS IN STATE CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES.
Abstract
INFORMATION IS GIVEN ON INMATES SENTENCED AS ADULT OR YOUTHFUL OFFENDERS TO A MAXIMUM TERM OF AT LEAST 1 YEAR AND 1 DAY WHO WERE BEING HELD IN THE CUSTODY OF STATE CORRECTIONAL SYSTEMS AS OF MIDNIGHT JUNE 30, 1973. EACH STATE STUDY IS SIMILAR IN SCOPE, TREATING SUCH INMATE CHARACTERISTICS, DIFFERENTIATED BY RACE, AS SEX, AGE, EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT, MOST SERIOUS OFFENSE FOR WHICH HELD, MAXIMUM SENTENCE LENGTH, AND LENGTH OF TIME SERVED. A BRIEF NATIONAL OVERVIEW, DISCUSSING SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES AMONG STATE INMATE POPULATIONS, ALSO IS PROVIDED. A COPY OF THE NATIONAL PRISONER CENSUS REPORT QUESTIONNAIRE IS APPENDED.
