Types of information collected in the Census of State Correctional Facilities, 1979, a series of data gathering efforts undertaken during the 1970's to assist policymakers in assessing and overcoming deficiencies in the Nation's correctional institutions, include inmate demographics, staff demographics, confinement unit information, as well as information on inmate programs and medical examination by tests given. The survey was conducted by mail, with followup telephone queries. There are 493 variables for each of the 791 facilities surveyed. The data come in two formats: a card-image file and an OSIRIS data set.
