This "transdisciplinary" index of American juvenile justice literature across 10 decades (1900-1999) is intended for the benefit of scholars, students, educators, jurists, attorneys, social workers, and psychologists who have an interest in juvenile behavior and societal responses to it.
Abstract
The index contains 732 book citations, and the periodical citations were extracted from 512 publications, excluding newspaper, magazine, and government sources. Traditional legal, social science, social work, and education reference works, as well as reference sources from the U.S. Government, psychiatry, pediatrics, and public and private juvenile and criminal justice organizations and foundations were consulted, along with media accounts in selected newspapers and magazines. The publications listed extend from an era noted for its optimism about the American juvenile court and its satellite organizations regarding their capacity to prevent and treat delinquency to a more pragmatic and less optimistic outlook about the mission and achievements of the juvenile justice system. The latter trend has tended to be more punitive and controlling than the inaugural era due to the neoconservative policies that are skeptical of the effectiveness of treatment while favoring incapacitation and tight control of delinquents. The intention of this index is to expose a wide range of constituencies to the literature that reflects historical efforts to conceptualize and deal with juvenile delinquents and delinquency in America.
