THE TREATMENT ALTERNATIVES TO STREET CRIME PROJECT (TASC) INTERRUPTS THE CYCLE OF CONTINUAL ARREST IN WHICH MANY DRUG DEPENDENT PERSONS FIND THEMSELVES.
Abstract
THE CENTRAL IOWA TASC PROJECT WHICH BECAME OPERATIONAL IN OCTOBER 1975, IS ONE OF MORE THAN 36 SUCH NATIONAL PROJECTS FUNDED BY THE LEAA. THIS REPORT COVERS THE FIRST YEAR OF THE PROJECT'S OPERATION AND IS DIVIDED INTO THREE MAJOR PARTS. FIRST, A DESCRIPTION OF THE METHODOLOGY USED IS GIVEN DISCUSSING SAMPLING PROCEDURES, DATA COLLECTION INSTRUMENTS, OPERATIONALIZATION OF KEY VARIABLES, LIMITATIONS OF DATA, AND STATISTICS. SECOND, THE CLIENT FLOW, REFERRALS, AND TREATMENT COUNSELORS' PERCEPTIONS OF THE TASC PROGRAM ARE ANALYZED USING QUESTIONNAIRE RESULTS AND OTHER METHODS. THE THIRD SECTION CONSISTS OF CONCLUSIONS AND INCLUDES RECOMMENDATIONS THAT THE ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAM BE BETTER DEFINED FOR THE COUNSELORS, RECORD-KEEPING SYSTEM BE REVAMPED, POTENTIAL REFERRAL SOURCES BE EXTENSIVELY EXPLORED, AND INDIVIDUALS CLASSIFIED AS REJECTED BE REDEFINED.
