This report presents statistics on juvenile court referrals, juvenile probation, and juvenile detention in Harris County (Tex.) for 1999 and describes the activities and accomplishments of the Harris County Probation Department for the same year.
Abstract
The Harris County Juvenile Board agenda for 1999 included the new Delta Boot Camp, the operation of the charter school in all institutions, the creation of special sex offender and drug offender caseloads, and the expansion of the Aftercare Supervision Program. The agency also began plans to occupy a new juvenile justice center. The number of referrals declined to 24,641 in 1999 from 34,692 in 1997 and 27,046 in 1998. The referrals in 1999 included 15 for murder, 43 for arson, 282 for felony assault, 950 for misdemeanor assault A and B, 1,384 for misdemeanor assault C, 109 for sexual assault, 42 for robbery, 879 for burglary, 4,511 for running away, 1,260 for city ordinance violations, and referrals for other offenses. Four hundred forty-eight youths were placed in residential treatment centers. A total of 6,948 youths were referred to the juvenile detention center in 1999, compared to 7,490 in 1997 and 6,605 in 1998.
